Abstract

1442148 Nailing presses AUTOMATED BUILDING COMPONENTS Inc 19 Dec 1973 [20 Dec 1972] 58910/73 Heading B4C A press for connecting together wooden members to form a truss or the like by fixing nailing plates into the members comprises two presses each having upper and lower platens provided with shearing knives which cut-off predetermined lengths of nailing plate stock from a coil thereof and simultaneously attach it to the wooden members, means being provided to feed the connector stock into position for shearing such that the shearing knives avoid the teeth in the plate. Feeding nailing stock.-As shown in Fig. 4 nailing stock is coiled on drums 110 and is fed forwards by a member 128 which moves from a full line position to a chain line position (as shown) to grip, by means of cylinders 180, 182 and feed the stock forwards under the action of piston 124 and guided by rollers 134, 136. Press operation and shearing.-Each nailing press is operated by a pair of platens 72, 74 and these are operated by cylinders 214, 216. Each platen has a cutting member 218, 220 therein respectively to cut-off the nailing stock and the corresponding member of the cutter 194, 196 is provided with a corrugated structure to locate the prongs of the nailing stock which remains connected to the supply. The cutters are shaped to provide a dovetail member on the leading edge of the stock and this locates in a groove during pressing to guide the edge of the stock. Operation.-The wood and stock are relatively positioned by a series of feelers, clamps and guides which are operated by or act on pneumatic, electric and hydraulic circuits to control the operation of the press.
