Abstract

1441666 Drinking cups OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 11 Sept 1973 42678/73 Heading A4A [Also in Divisions B5, B8, C3 and F4] A container 10 comprises a sidewall portion 12 and a bottom portion 14, the sidewall portion extending upwardly from the bottom portion to an upper end thereof providing an open mouth rim of the container, at least the sidewall portion being formed of a laminated material comprising a layer of a first material, e.g. paper, and a layer of a high molecular weight polymeric material, e.g. foamed polystyrene, secured to the first material by an adhesive comprising a major component which is an adhesive for the first material, the adhesive also containing polymer particles which are fused to the high molecular weight polymeric material, the first material being dissimilar in composition from the high molecular weight polymeric material. The major component of the adhesive may be an aqueous emulsion of an ethylene/vinyl acetate compolymer and the polymer particles - containing part of the adhesive composition may comprise polymer, e.g. polystyrene, dissolved in a solvent, e.g. toluene, which will at least partially dissolve the high molecular weight polymer layer. The high molecular weight polymer layer may comprise polystyrene having a molecular weight of 50,000-400,000, the polystyrene present in the adhesive preferably having a molecular weight 5-15% of the molecular weight of the polystyrene in the layer. The adhesive may also contain plasticizers dyes, antimicrobial agents, pigments, insolubilizers, e.g. Werner type aliphatic acylato chromic complexes, solubilizers, viscosity control agents and other polymers. The bottom of the container may be made from the same laminated material as the side walls or from coated paper or unfoamed polystyrene. A cover 11 also of laminated material, plastics material or paper may be provided which fits over beaded rim 15. The paper layer which forms the outer surface of the laminate may be printed.
