Abstract

1437741 Can ends CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 14 June 1974 [15 June 1973] 26524/74 Heading B8D A can end comprises a closure flap 15 defined in the end by a generally U-shaped slit, and tab 17 hingedly attached to the end at one side of closure flap and including a flange 27, which extends around an aperture in the tab and is adapted to depress the closure flap into the can when the tab is swung over the flap and pressed thereagainst, the flange thus engaging with the sides of the formed opening. The tab may be of polyethylene or polystyrene and comprises a shield portion 25 from which the flange projects, and hinge portion 24, which is bonded to the can end and has a resilient headed stud portion 28 removably-received in vent-forming opening 29. The flange has peripheral groove 27a making a tight-fit with the edge of the opening formed on depression of the flap. The flap is initially bulged at its centre and then flattened to bring the edge portion 22, Fig. 2 (not shown), below the underface of the can end, and then sealed by a plastisol sealant 23.
