1436384 Fluid-pressure servomotor systems SULZER BROS Ltd 16 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 23371/73 Heading G3P [Also in Division F1] A fuel injection pump 1 of a diesel engine 6 is operable during normal operation to deliver a variable quantity, but depending on the value of a given operating parameter of the engine e.g. the engine speed falling below 60% of normal, adjustment means 36-44 operate to retard the start and end of injection without altering the quantity delivered. During normal operation, as the engine speed increases, a speed controller 23 driven through gearing 32-35 from the pump camshaft L1 causes, via a rod 25, clockwise rotation of a three-armed lever 26 about a fulcrum X. This, in turn, moves rods 30, 31 to cause rotation of levers 17, 18 and eccentric pivot pins 15, 16 thereon. The pins 15, 16 form the fulcrums of levers 13, 14 which control, respectively, the closing and opening of an inlet valve 7 and a spill valve 8, the pins moving so as to advance the closure of the inlet valve 7 and to retard the opening of the spill valve 8. Thus the quantity delivered increases. A controller 50 responsive to engine speed, temperature, combustion pressure or the charging pressure of a supercharger moves a valve 46 to a position in which compressed air from a line 47 is delivered through a line 45 to a cylinder 43 to displace a spring-loaded piston 42. Movement of the piston 42 causes, via linkwork 36-41, shifting of the fulcrum X to a new position X<SP>1</SP> and consequentially a simultaneous retardation of the valves 7, 8 without alteration of the delivery quantity. The valve 46 and the controller 50 may be adapted to provide a stepless servo-controlled retardation of the valves 7,8. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the pump 1 has a constant injection start in normal operation.
