Abstract
1,250,612. Regulating I.C. engines. SIMMS GROUP RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. June 2, 1969 [March 1, 1968], No.10070/68. Heading F1B. To effect engine braking when the fuel supply is cut-off the initial position of one or each exhaust valve 11 is adjusted from the normal closed position to an open position. A fuel injection pump control rod 10 operable by an accelerator pedal 12 is movable from the dashed line position 9 to the full line position on engine over-running to cut-off the fuel supply to engine injectors and close the switch 13 in the circuit of a solenoid valve 16. The solenoid valve 16 connects an engine lubricating oil supply line 18 to the cylinder 22 with the switch 13 closed to move the piston 21 from abutment with the cylinder end 22a to abutment with the cylinder end 22b. The stem 25 on the piston 21 moves the arm 26 to rotate a shaft 27 supported for rotation about its axis and mounted eccentrically on the end of the rocker pivot shaft 28. The rocker 29 is lowered to take up the clearance between the rocker and the valve 11 and provide an initial opening, e.g. 0À020 inches, of the valve. The rocker 29 is operated by an engine cam and a push rod 30. A manually operable switch 17 is provided in the solenoid valve circuit to allow the operation of the valve 16 to be over-ridden.
