Abstract

1434918 Non-metallic springs METZELER Ltd 2 May 1973 [5 June 1972] 26180/72 Heading F2S A resilient mounting, e.g. for an I.C. engine, has two metal members 11A, 12A bonded to an intermediate elastomeric member 13A, the first, 11A, being partly embedded in the member 13A and the second having at least one side wall 14A or 16A extending along a side of the member 13A, there being a space 18A in the elastomer extending from an exposed portion 19A of the elastomeric member 13A between the member 11A and the side wall 14A or 16A. The space 18A closes at at least one side of the mounting, when there is sufficient relative displacement of the metal members 11A, 12A, so that resistance of the mounting to the displacement increases. A surface of the elastomer in the space 18A has at least one convex surface 21A to make the mounting progressively stiffer to displacement. Grooves 23A in the surface 21A close off progressively with the displacement to modify the stiffening. The mounting shown is used as a front mounting for an engine. A wall 15A of member 12A is uppermost and horizontal. The first (cast or pressed) member 11A has a rib 26 and the second member 12A has studs 25A, for securement of the mounting. In other embodiments, the second member (12) has three or four sides and each member has at least one stud. These may be aligned only by static load. An embodiment, Fig. 6, with a four-sided second member (12F) is intended primarily for compression of the elastomer, in use, by displacement of the first member (11F) towards a back wall of the second (12F). The mounting is made using a two-part vulcanizing mould with at least one insert for forming the space 18. The elastomer is vulcanized in situ in the second member 12 and the first member 11 embedded.
