Abstract

1434753 Two part connectors BUNKER RAMO CORP 18 April 1973 [18 April 1972] 18791/73 Heading H2E In an electrical connector comprising a plug 2 and a socket 1, the socket has a longitudinally slit conductive sleeve 6 with a longitudinally extending pin 7, with a taper 10, towards its free end, mounted within the sleeve to provide an annular space between the pin and sleeve at the forward end of the socket and the conductive plug has a tubular projection 14 longitudinally slit into a plurality of resilient contact fingers 13 and having an opening 15 at its free end, the projection which has a smaller transverse dimension or dimensions than the socket prior to insertion is insertable into the sleeve so that the pin enters the opening and expands the contact fingers against the sleeve. In an embodiment the sleeve is roll formed from sheet metal and has a crimp terminal 3 and a means 4 for locking the socket into a housing. A base 9 of the metal pin has slots 8 into which the sleeve is deformed and extending from the base 9 the pin has a cylindrical portion 11, a frusto-conical portion 10a and a steeper taper frusto-conical portion 10. The plug is also roll formed from sheet metal and has a relative rotation-preventing stop 5 and the opening 15 is of larger diameter than the tip of the pin. In use the plug is inserted into the socket and the pin spreads the fingers into contact with the sleeve almost from the start of insertion, the contact pressure being increased during insertion. The socket and plug may be of bronze and may be extruded, the pin may be of plastics material and the connector may have terminals and retaining means for utilization in multi-contact housings.
