Abstract
1291336 Launching tube; missiles MESSERSCHMITT - BOLKOW - BLOHM GmbH 2 Dec 1970 [16 Jan 1970] 57356/70 Headings F3C and F3A To reduce the loud report due to rapid expansion of exhaust gases at the muzzle end 2 of an expendable shoulder-mounted launch tube 1 when a missile 10 leaves the tube, the tube end is closed by a diaphragm-like piston 15, Fig. 1b, and the exhaust gases 17 leave slowly through two small vents 19 provided in the tube. The missile 10 is supported by a sliding ring 14 and a propulsive charge 12 is located between the piston 15 and a further piston 16. The end 3 of the tube is closed by a frangible diaphragm 6 and the space between the diaphragm and piston 16 has a filling 13 comprising, e.g. a mixture of water and oil, a gelatinous substance which liquifies under pressure, a grease, or sand. On detonation of the charge 12 both pistons 15, 16 move to the positions shown in Fig. lb and the diaphragm 6 is broken. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the apertures 19 are not provided and instead the piston 15 has a small central aperture which is normally closed by a plug on the rear end of the missile, this plug being withdrawn when the missile leaves the tube.
