Abstract
1433433 Thermal switches; switch contacts ESSEX INTERNATIONAL Inc 19 Feb 1974 [7 March 1973] 7508/74 Heading H1N A thermal switch comprises a thermally expansible and contractile material 23 which expands on a rise in temperature to deform a resilient mass 25 to compress a conductive rubber switching pad 29 to bridge between terminal 15 and body 2. Material 23 may be a microcrystalline wax, with or without metal particles, which melts and expands at a critical temperature, or for higher temperatures, a eutectic solder. The resilient mass 25 may be silicone rubber. Switching pad 29 may be of silicone rubber throughout which is dispersed conductive particles such as copper or other base metal spheres coated with a noble metal such as silver, such as in Specification 1,290,963 and when compressed. it bridges the gap between terminal 15 and body 2. The operating temperature may be adjusted slightly by deforming end wall 18. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the switching pad bridges between two terminals (44), (45). The switch is intended for sensing engine block temperature in an internal combustion engine and completes a circuit to a warning lamp L.
