Abstract

1431167 Cable joint cover RAYCHEM SA NV 7 Sept 1973 [8 Sept 1972 25 May 1973] 41860/72 and 25199/73 Heading H2E In a cover for a cable splice, rigid tube 3, either slit or in two parts 3, 3a optionally hinged, is fitted possibly by bayonet slots to rigid support rings 4, split or pre-fitted on cable; parts 3, 3a, 4 may be of metal or insulating material. Dilated heat-shrinkable sleeve 1 is coated with adhesive meltable sealant 5 preferably non- bonding to 3, 3a. Laminar comb-like prong assembly, of, e.g. Al, (Fig. 5, not shown), may be fitted longitudinally outward of rings 4, sleeve 1 then being extended beyond the prongs with sealant only from their midpoints outward (Fig. 6, not shown). On heating, sleeve 1 shrinks as in Fig. 2, gripping tightly tube 3, 3a and becoming sealed to cable sheaths 8 and to the ends of rings 4 or to the prongs, which smooth out the radial step (Fig. 7, not shown). After a joint cover has been opened neat its centre section only, the unsealed part of sleeve 1 may be removed, to be replaced by a new short heat shrinkable sleeve (Fig. 3, not shown). If the whole cover has been opened the sealed parts of sleeve 1 may be removed by heat softening of the sealant, after which a new sleeve 1 may be fitted (Fig. 4, not shown). In both methods the sleeve 1 is made split with lipped edges, closed after emplacement by a C strip (as in Specification 1,155,470) before heat shrinking. Sealant is applied over the whole length of the replacement sleeve, and is melted when heat is applied to shrink this sleeve.
