878,993. Cable joints and end sleeves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. April 1, 1960 [April 7, 1959], No. 11684/59. Classes 36 and 38 (1). [Also in Group XXVIII] Cable joints or the bared ends of cables are sleeved by lightly irradiating a length of polyethylene or polypropylene tubing, then heating it above the melting point of the same plastic that has not been subjected to irradiation, expanding it, placing it over the joint or termination and then re-heating it to cause it to resume its original shape and shrink down over the joint or termination. It may be heated in a hot liquid and expanded by forcing it over a mandrel or applying internal air pressure and then cooled whilst being maintained in the expanded state.
