Abstract

1483729 Polyalkenyl succinic acid and derivatives thereof SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 11 Sept 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 43048/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] C 50-700 alkenyl succinic acid or anhydride is prepared by (a) heating a polyolefin, e.g. polyisobutylene, with maleic anhydride at a temperature above 150‹ C., (b) optionally hydrolysing the resulting anhydride to the acid, (c) adding a solvent, e.g. white spirit, to the reaction mixture during or after cooling, and (d) washing the resulting solution with a mixture of water and up to 60 wt. per cent of a monoalcohol, e.g. isopropanol, the solvent used in (c) being substantially miscible with the reaction mixture and substantially immiscible with water and the mono-alcohol. The product may be hydrogenated. The products are used to make lubricant and fuel additives, e.g. by esterification with a polyalcohol, preferably using the method of Specification 1,483,728.
