1430595 Shrinkproofing wool PRECISION PROCESSES (TEXTILES) LTD 11 April 1973 [19 April 1972] 18229/72 Heading D1P The shrink-resistance of wool is unproved by treatment in a continuous process with a single aqueous fluid containing an oxidising agent in an amount to reduce shrinkage in an amount of 5-80% compared with untreated wool, and a polymer having a plurality of cationic ionisable sites per molecule in an amount to deposit 0.1 to 2.0% by weight on the weight of the dry wool, so as to effect reaction of the oxidising agent on the wool and exhaust the polymeric substance on the wool. The oxidising agent may be acidified alkali metal di- or trichioroisocyanurate, alkali metal hypochlorite, an acidified solution of chlorine in water, mixtures of dichloroisocyanurate or hypochlorite with potassium permanganate or permonosulphuric acid, or permonosulphuric acid or alkali metal salts thereof, or potassium permanganate. The polymer must be soluble or dispersable, inert or stable to the oxidising solution and wetting agents, e.g. polyvinyl imidazoline, a polyamide cross-linked with epichlorolhydrin of functional group formula a polyamine, a polypropylene-polyamide of formula reacted with epichlorohydrin, polyvinyl pyridine, methlolation product of polyacrylamide, or a polyamide-epoxy adduct. The solution may contain stabilisers, e.g. amines, morpholine, caprolactam, fatty alcohol or glycol/ethylene oxide condensates, ethoxylates of wool waxderivatives or polyoxyethylene glycols. The solution may contain wetting agents, e.g. polyethyleneoxy-alkylphenols. The wool may be in the form of loose fibres, top, yarn, or knitted or woven fabric, and blends containing wool fibres. The wool may be treated by immersion and passing through nip rolls at 10-50‹C. The wool, after the shrink-resist treatment, may be washed, passed through a reducing bath of sodium sulphite and bisulphite, and rinsed.
