Abstract

1533343 Reducing shrinkage BASF AG 29 March 1976 12492/76 Addition to 1470243 Headings D1B and DIP Textile goods consisting of or containing animal protein fibres, e.g. wool and silk are rendered shrink-resistant, non-felting and of improved handle by treatment with an oxidizing agent prior to impregnation with a bath containing an aziridine group-containing compound according to the parent specification. The oxidizing agent is preferably a chlorinating agent, e.g. the potassium or sodium salt of dichloroisocyanuric acid but may be a permanganate, peroxy sulphate or peroxide. The oxidizing agent may be applied batchwise, e.g. in a top-dyeing apparatus or by continuous padding from a liquor at a pH of from 3 to 6 to which an organic or inorganic acid has been added. The oxidation may be followed by dechlorination, using dithionite or peroxide. The ozidized and dechlorinated material may be rinsed and optionally dried or kept in a J-box prior to impregnation with the aziridine group-containing compound. Dyeing, e.g. with an after-chroming or 1:2 metal complex dye, may be carried out between dechlorination and impregnation with the aziridine compound, or after such impregnation. Nitrogen-free wetting agents may be used to assist oxidation and impregnation. Flock, tops, yarn, knitted fabric or woven fabric may be treated.
