Abstract

1,192,553. Shrinkproofing wool. PRECISION PROCESSES (TEXTILES) Ltd. 28 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966], No. 34288/66. Heading D1P. Wool, e.g. in the form of top, wool serge or knitwear, is shrink-proofed and rendered antistatic by substantially uniformly treating it with an aqueous solution of hypochlorous acid at an acid pH to modify it to such an extent that there is a reduction in shrinkage, when compared with art untreated control which is subjected to the same washing test, of at least 15%, then substantially uniformly impregnating it with a water-soluble cationic hydrophilic resinous condensation product which is obtainable by (a) reacting a mono-and/or polyfunctional derivative of a polyalkylene oxide with a polyamine in such proportions that the resulting polyamine contains a plurality of reactive hydrogen atoms each of which is attached 'to a nitrogen atom and (b) then reacting the product with at least one bifunctional compound containing at least one epoxide or alpha-halo-betahydroxyalkyl group, at least the latter part of the treatment with the cationic hydrophilic resinous condensation product being carried out under alkaline conditions, and then heating it e.g. at 70‹-120‹C. The aqueous solution of hypochlorous acid may be obtained from an aqueous solution of an alkali metal dichloroisocyanurate to which an acid has been added, a solution of dichloroisocyanuric acid in aqueous tetrasodium pyrophosphate which has been acidified or an acidified solution of a hypochlorite, and the treatment with hypochlorous acid is preferably applied from a short liquor bath having a pH of 3-6 to which permonosulphuric acid or an alkali metal salt thereof and a wetting agent, e.g. a condensation product of trimethyl nonylphenol with 6 moles of ethylene oxide, may be added. After treatment with the hypochlorous acid the wool may be treated with an aqueous bath containing sodium sulphite. The cationic hydrophilic resinous condensation product may be prepared by the reaction of ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, dipropylene triamine, paraphenylene diamine or 1,4- diaminio-cyclohexane with a polyethylene oxide or polypropylene oxide having 3-70 ethereal oxygen atoms and a molecular weight of 400- 2,000 the terminal hydroxyl groups of which have been reacted with phosgene, chlorosulphonic acid, epichlorohydrin or a compound forming a sulphuric ester grouping, in the presence of boron trifluoride or stannic chloride, the resulting product then being reacted with epichlorohydrin, dichlorohydrin or polyalkylene glycol bis-chlorohydrin ether. The cationic hydrophilic resinous condensation product may be applied to the wool from a bath having a pH of 7-10 which may contain an anionic wetting agent, e.g. the sodium salt of a sulphated fatty alcohol.
