Abstract

1428965 Rotating barrel locks WILMOTBREEDEN Ltd 16 April 1973 [22 April 1972] 18777/72 Heading E2A A barrel for a rotating barrel lock has a key receiving slot and two separate banks of tumblers A4, B4 respectively positioned at opposite sides of the slot, the tumblers being operable independently of each other by a key the key engaging surfaces of the tumblers being adjacent to opposite edges of the slot. As shown the tumblers of one bank are paired with the tumblers in the other bank and are spring loaded outwardly of the barrel, the springs of each bank being held in the barrel by a respective bar 23. Each tumbler has a shoulder 12 projecting into the key receiving slot whereby the tumbler can be urged to their withdrawn position by a key. The barrel is provided with a further spring loaded tumbler by which the barrel may be held within a lock casing (Figs. 1, 3, not shown). The barrel is formed with a pair of axially extending stubs for providing a coupling of the barrel to a device such as a steering column or ignition switch mechanism. Key guides 20 are provided in the slot. The projecting edges of the tumblers may be cut back to prevent lock picking by "jiggling". The key for operating a lock having the above described barrel has profiles along both its edges, the key being insertable in the slot in two positions of the key. The key projects into the barrel further in one position than in the other end to this end the barrel is provided with axially spaced faces (Fig. 8, not shown) each for co-operation with a different one of a pair of shoulders 17, 18 of the key in one position thereof and one of the faces co-operating with one of the shoulders in the other position of the key. The faces are spaced by half the tumbler separation and the cuts of the keys, which on each edge are equal to the total number of tumblers, one, on each edge, taken in pairs the same as the other edge but reversed. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1282969.
