Abstract

1420188 Drawing polyester monofils FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 22 March 1974 [28 March 1973] 12933/74 Heading B5B Polyethylene terephthalate monofils of denier 500 to 50,000 are drawn in a two-stage process; (i) In an atmosphere of a plasticizing vapour at a temperature such that the monofil is heated to a temperature between the second order transition temperature and the melting point to a draw ratio of 1À5 : 1 to 4 : 1. (ii) Subsequently to a total draw ratio of from 4 : 1 to 10 : 1. The second drawing may be carried out in a vapour or under dry conditions. The polyester must have an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0À6. Preferably the vapour contains at least 1% by weight of entrained liquid in droplet form, the preferred vapour being steam at a pressure of 1 to 150 p.s.i.g. In the processes illustrated the filaments are passed into the steam at a temperature such that vapour condenses on them; they are then stretched, dried, stretched again, optionally heat-treated under a tension producing a draw ratio of 1À0 : 1À0, and wound up. The filaments may be of a circular or, as in Example 13, of rectangular cross-section.
