1419988 Letting out hides K RABANUS 30 Jan 1973 [31 Jan 1972] 4568/73 Heading B4B Apparatus for letting out hides forms a cut across the hide, moves the hide parts so formed relative to each other along the line of the cut to stagger them, sews the parts together and then repeats the process on lines parallel to the cut along the length of the hide. The apparatus comprises plates 2, 3 capable of clamping a hide against upstanding portions of a base 4, a slotted guide 6 through which a rotary knife 14 operates while travelling along a parallel guide 13 and sewing means 20 movable stepwise along a guide 13<SP>1</SP>. A carriage 9 with hair parting means in the form of a projection or air nozzle is movable parallel to the guides between the plates 2, 3 and may also rise and fall. In operation as shown, a hide 1 is fed diagonally between the plates 2, 3 and base projections and clamped between them. The carriage 9 then travels along to lie between the plates and part the hairs beneath the slot 7 and rises to tension the hide, Fig. 4. The knife 14 passes along the slot 7 entering a slot in the hair parting means to cut the hide. One plate is then moved longitudinally of the other, taking part of the hide with it and then approaches the other plate, the carriage having withdrawn, to clamp the cut margins, Fig. 5. These are sewn, the hide released and fed forwards and the sequence repeated. In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown) two hide portions are processed simultaneously, one plate being divided transversely to form, in effect, two independently operable halves (19, 19<SP>1</SP>) beneath which the hide portions are fed diagonally and obliquely to each other. Other elements of the apparatus operate on both hide portions as before. In other arrangements, the hide portions may be manipulated by spiked rollers (not shown) replacing the planes 2, 3 or fed by a spiked reciprocatable and pivoted bar (22), Fig. 7 (not shown).
