Abstract

1416894 Porous polymer flakes MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 31 Oct 1972 [12 Nov 1971 20 Dec 1971] 50060/72 Heading C3C [Also in Division D2] Porous polymeric flakes are made by (1) preparing a mixture of a fibre forming synthetic organic linear high molecular weight polymer and a finely divided inorganic component (as defined) in a solvent which has a boiling point lower than the softening point (as defined) of the polymeric component and which is capable of dissolving the polymeric component at elevated temperatures, the inorganic component being present in a weight fraction of W f based on the combined weight of the polymeric and inorganic components and W f satisfying the relation wherein V p is the specific volume of the polymeric component (as defined), V a is the bulkiness of the finely divided inorganic component (as defined) and V f is the true specific volume of the finely divided inorganic component (as defined), (2) heating said mixture to dissolve the polymeric component in the solvent, and (3) extruding said heated mixture under a pressure of at least the autogenous pressure through an orifice into a zone of lower pressure and lower temperature thereby to evaporate the solvent and produce porous flakes having a plurality of irregular voids therein, the walls forming such voids having a thickness not greater than 5 microns. Sheets may be made by dispensing the porous flakes in a liquid in which the flakes are insoluble, beating or refining the dispersion to form fibrillated elements which are then formed into a web, and removing the liquid from the web. In examples the flakes consisted of a polymer which was polyethylene, crystalline polypropylene, polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, nylon-6,6 or polymethyl methacrylate and an inorganic compound which was a finely divided silicic acid, diatomaceous earth, magnesium carbonate, clay, talc, calcium carbonate or mixtures thereof.
