1439514 Making fibrils MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 9 July 1973 [13 July 1972 20 Jan 1973 2 Feb 1973] 32595/73 Heading B5B [Also in Division D2] Flake- or sliver-like elements composed of a finely divided inorganic substance in a weight fraction of W f and a fibre-forming synthetic polymeric material in a weight fraction of 1-W f , W f satisfying the following relationship where V p is the specified volume of the synthetic polymeric material, V a is the bulkiness of the inorganic substance under a pressure of 10 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> gauge, and V f is the true specific volume of the inorganic substance, and having voids therein, the thickness of the walls forming the voids being not more than 5 microns, may be made by mixing appropriate amounts of the inorganic substance and the polymeric material in a suitable solvent for the polymer, heating the mixture until the polymeric material dissolves, and extruding the mixture through an orifice into a zone of lower pressure and temperature thereby evaporating the solvent and producing the desired flake- or sliver-like elements. The finely divided inorganic substance has a miximum size of 500 microns, and may be asbestos, alumina, antimony trioxide, barite, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, kaolin, carbon black, diatomaceous earth, feldspar, terra alba, quartz, graphite, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium oxide, mica, molybdenum disulphide, agolmatolite clay, sericite, silica, calcium silicate, magnesium silicate, aluminium silicate, titanium dioxide, whiting, and slate powder. The polymeric material may be a polyolefin, polyamide, polyster, polycarbonate, polyurethane, polyether, or homo- or co-polymers of vinyl compounds. Specified solvents include hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, esters, ethers, nitriles, trifluoroacetic acid, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulphide, nitromethane, water, and SO 2 , and combinations thereof.
