Abstract

A mixture of (1) polyethylene or polyethylene oxide and (2) a second fibre-forming organic polymer insoluble in the first polymer is extruded and stretched first at a temperature between 150 DEG C. and the extrusion temperature and then at a lower temperature. Products which are separable into fine filaments, e.g. by mechanical means or by drawing them over a sharp edge, are obtained. Alternatively, one of the components of the products, e.g. polyethylene, may be dissolved out, e.g. with toluene, to yield fine filaments of the other component. The products may also be used as such or converted into staple fibres. Specified components (2) are polystyrene, polyalkyl- or halogen-styrenes, polymethacrylic esters, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl esters, polyvinyl halides, polyamides, fluorovinyl polymers, and copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile, or of vinyl halides and vinyl esters, or of vinyl and vinylidene halides.
