Abstract

1416836 Modulating light SUWA SEIKOSHA KK 26 April 1974 18333/74 Addition to 1338739 Heading H4F In a display cell comprising a layer of remote liquid crystal material between two electrode structures, the electrode structures are spaced by a peripheral film of adhesive bonded therebetween, e.g. by heating, and a film of resin material is disposed on each structure and in contact with the remote layer, the resin preferably having a softening (or decomposition) point higher than that of the adhesive. As described, each resin film is rubbed so as to produce a "twist" cell with voltage controlled optical activity, and it is said that the remote molecular alignment produced by the rubbing is more uniform than that obtained by rubbing the electrode structure itself. The adhesive may be based on epoxy resin, silicone, polyethylene, polyester, polyolefin, nylon, or polyamide materials, or may be an adhesive for glass. The resin may be a fluoroplastics (e.g. PTFE), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyester, polyamide, silicone, or polyimide polybenzimidazole resin material. A PTFE resin may be used with a polyester adhesive, or a PVA or polyester resin with a nylon adhesive. The electrode structures are segmented transparent conductive films on glass substrates.
