Abstract

1416666 Submarines A P PEDRICK 1 April 1974 8610/74 Headings B7A and B7S [Also in Division F2] A submarine craft 1 for use in the laying of underwater pipelines 4 as illustrated in Fig. 1 has caterpillar tracks for 'crawling' movement along the sea bed but can be rendered buoyant so that it can pass over depressions in the sea bed. The invention is characterized by the provision of a detachable crew cabin 10, Fig. 4. In addition to the caterpillar tracks, the craft has water screws 21, 22, one on either side of its longitudinal axis. Drive can be to one or both of the tracks or to one or both of the screws. The craft buoyancy means are tanks 28, 29- one on each side of the craft-which can have sea water flooded in or pumped out as required. A cable 3, Fig. 1, can carry messages and/or air to the crew cabin from a surface ship 2.
