Abstract

1414993 Hydrotreating lubricating oils GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 20 Oct 1972 [20 Oct 1971] 48441/72 Heading C5E Lubricating oils are produced by subjecting a wide boiling range crude lubricating oil to hydrotreating in at least one primary reaction zone, removing a portion of the hydrotreated oil, subjecting the balance of the hydrotreated oil to further hydrotreating in at least one secondary reaction zone, recovering a heavier lubricating oil product from the removed portion and recovering a lighter lubricating oil product from the secondary reaction zone. The hydrotreating can be carried out at 343-482‹ C. and 140-700 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and the conditions in the secondary zone can be more severe than those in the primary zone, e.g. a lower space velocity; the feed can consist of distillate components or can also contain residual components. A feed 10 is hydrotreated at 12 and 18 and a portion 22 of the hydrotreated oil is distilled at 24 to provide a bright stock 28, a furnace oil and lighter fraction 26 and a 343-510‹ C. distillate 30 which is recycled to the first reaction zone. The remainder 38 of the hydrotreated oil 20 is passed to the secondary hydrotreating zone 34. The catalyst used in the reactors 12, 18 and 34 is a fixed bed of nickel-tungsten-fluorine on silica alumina.
