Abstract

1414181 Hydrotreating lube oils GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 20 Oct 1972 [20 Oct 1971] 48442/72 Heading C5E Lubricating oils are produced by fractionating a crude lubricating oil into a plurality of fractions of different boiling ranges, separately hydrotreating each of the fractions and separately fractionating the hydrotreated effluents wherein the separate fractionations are conducted so that lower boiling effluents comprising 10-20% by volume of material boiling above 343‹ C. are removed from the desired boiling range product fractions. The hydrotreating can be carried out at 316-482‹ C. and a hydrogen partial pressure of 140-700 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> using a catalyst such as nickel + tungsten on fluorinepromoted silica-alumina, Fig. 1 illustrates an embodiment in which an oil feed 10 is separated into a fraction 14 boiling from 343‹ to 454‹ C., a fraction 16 boiling from 454-538‹ C. and a bottoms fraction 18 which is deasphalted with propane; the fractions are hydrotreated and fractionated in separate reactors and hydrotreators. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates an embodiment in which an oil is separated into four fractions which are separately hydrotreated and fractionated in a blocked operation using a single reactor and fractionator.
