Abstract

1414971 Pneumatic conveyers POST OFFICE 5 Oct 1973 [5 Oct 1972] 46041/72 Heading B8A [Also in Division F1] Flat articles are diverted from their original direction of travel by directed air jets in a fixed guide surface, the output end of which is positioned to deliver articles from the guide surface in a direction inclined to their original direction of travel. In Fig. 1, letters travelling along path I are forwarded by rollers 1A past sensor 6 and by rollers 1B to diverting guide surface 2. Apertures 3 in surface 2 are supplied with air under pressure from a source not shown and are directed such that a letter forwarded by rollers 1B is attracted towards the surface by the aerodynamic action of the jets. The surface is curved to lead letters away from the original direction of travel. The diverting means may be used in sorting letters, some passing straight on by supply of air to a straight guide surface, others being diverted, as shown in Fig. 2.
