Abstract
1,231,157. Hydrotreating lubricating oil stocks. SUN OIL CO. 20 June, 1969 [20 June, 1968], No. 31225/69. Heading C5E. Lubricating oil stocks boiling above 650 F., e.g. vacuum distillate, deasphalted reduced crude and deasphalted residuum, to be hydrocracked at 650-875 F. with a hydrogen partial pressure of 1500-10,000 p.s.i. using a mixture of nickel sulphide and tungsten sulphide on alumina as catalyst, are first separated into fractions of different boiling range and each of the fractions is subjected to hydrocracking conditions of severity commensurate with its composition. As shown in Fig. 1 the fraction boiling at 850-1000 F. is passed through hydrocracker No. 3; the above 1000 F. fraction is deasphalted, combined with the effluent from hydrocracker No. 3 and the mixture passed through hydrocracker No. 2, and the 650-850 F. fraction is mixed with the effluent from hydrocracker No. 2 and the mixture passed through hydrocracker No. 1. The effluent from hydrocracker No. 1 is fractionated to provide lubricating oil distillates, bright stock and gases and other light products. According to Fig. 2 (not shown) the charge stock is separated into three fractions which are then processed separately in three hydrocrackers and the effluents from the three hydrocrackers are fractionated separately. A light stream, approximating a 100 neutral oil and having a viscosity index of about 85, resulting from the hydrocracking of the above 1000 F. feed is mixed with the 650-850 F. feed for further hydrocracking and V.I. upgrading. A stream resulting from the fractionation of the hydrocracked 850-1000 F. feed and similar in boiling range and viscosity to the deasphalted above 1000 F. feed is mixed with this above 1000 F. feed for further hydrocracking and upgrading in V.I.
