Abstract

1414130 Reciprocating pumps and motors J C RIDLEY 27 Oct 1972 [17 Nov 1971 16 Aug 1972] 53377/71/ and 38231/72 Heading F1A An oscillating-cylinder pump or motor comprises a plurality of cylinders 21 with pistons 22, the cylinders being pivoted in a casing 11, 12, 13, and the pistons pivoted on a crank-shaft 14, or vice versa. As shown, three pistons engage crankpin 15 and two pistons engage crank-pin 16, the respective sets of cylinders being axially spaced relative to the crank-shaft. Flow of liquid to and from the cylinders is controlled by distributer valves incorporated in the cylinder pivot, Fig.7, or in the end of the cylinder, Fig.8. In Fig.7, the pivot pin supporting the cylinder is formed with coaxial inlet and outlet bores 23, (24), Fig.5 (not shown), extending from opposite ends of the pin and communicating with respective pairs of axial grooves 26, 28 and 25, 27. During cylinder oscillation, a port 35 connected to the cylinder communicates alternately with inlet and outlet grooves 28, 25, pressure balancing being provided by grooves 26, 27. Port 35 is formed either in a sleeve attached to the side of the cylinder, or in the cylinder end wall. In Fig.8, inlet and outlet poppet valves 46 are mounted in the cylinder end wall and are opened alternately against springs 45 by plungers 48 engaging abutments 50 on the casing. The valve seat aperture diameter may be equal to or smaller than that of the bore 41, the latter arrangement providing pressure biasing of the valves to their closed position. Plungers 48 may be adjustably screw threaded on valve stems 47, Fig.9 (not shown).
