Abstract

1413292 Piston rings LIGHT PRODUCTION Ltd H GUNNER and P WHITE 12 July 1973 [12 July 1972] 32644/72 Heading F2T In piston packing comprising a ring 12, Fig. 8, urged outwardly by an expander 9 housed in a groove 13 in the ring, the expander has one or more portions 17 that engage an inwardly facing surface 22 on the ring, which surface is located inwardly of the bottom of the groove. Preferably, to prevent wear between the expander and the bottom of the groove, the expander is clear of the groove bottom when the portions 17 engage the surfaces 22. The expander may be of crenallated form when viewed radially and may be of wire, Fig. 2, preferably of rectangular cross-section. Alternatively, it may be of stamped metal, Figs. 9 and 11. The expander may be of U-cross-section, the ends of the arms being bent axially to form the portions 17, 25. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 12, the expander is formed with lugs 26 to engage the surface 22.
