Abstract

1,123,332. Piston rings. WELLWORTHY Ltd. 4 Jan., 1967 [7 Jan., 1966], No. 943/66. Heading F2T. A piston-ring comprises a radially outwardly opening U-section carrier ring 1 expanded by spring means 9, Fig. 1, located within the U and bearing against abutment means on the ring 1. The spring means 9 comprises a corrugated spring strip which has its ends 8, 9 butted together and bears against shoulders 5 on the arms of the U whereby, in use, it urges the ring 1, which is gapped at 10, outwardly against the cylinder wall. The spring means may comprise two parts (11, 12), Fig. 2 (not shown), a coil spring 19, Fig. 3, or two coaxial coil springs (23, 24), Fig. 4 (not shown). In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the carrier ring 33 is formed in two parts 33a, 33b having thickened outer peripheral portions forming bands 34, 35 and grooved to form a recess 36 housing a coil spring 37. In the embodiment of Fig. 8, the carrier ring 45 has internal lugs 46 for the spring 47. The ring may be provided with oil drainage slots 17, Fig. 1, 22, Fig. 3 and 48, Fig. 8 and may be made of metal coated with another metal, e.g. chromium, copper, tin or silver or it may be made of or coated with plastics, e.g. P.T.F.E.
