Abstract

1412488 Centrifugal pumps JONKOPINGS MEKANISKA WERKSTADS AB 20 Feb 1973 [21 Feb 1972] 8358/73 Heading F1C In a pump for liquids containing cellulose or other fibre suspensions and having at least one impeller through which the whole of the liquid to be pumped is passed, the inlet edge of each impeller vane 1 is contained substantially in a plane perpendicular to the impeller axis, and the inlet angle of each vane is at least 50 degrees. The inlet angle may be as large as 120 degrees but is preferably between 70 degrees and 110 degrees. As shown in Fig. 4, the inlet angle is preferably substantially 90 degrees. The use of a large inlet angle causes increased turbulence 11, which serves to carry away pulp fibres tending to lodge on the inlet edge 10 of the vane. To assist further in dislodging fibres, the inlet edge 10 is as shown bulbously thickened on that side which faces in the direction of rotation of the impeller. Vanes 15 on the back of the impeller reduce the axial thrust on the impeller and also oppose the tendency of fibres to penetrate into the gap 17 between the impeller and the core plate 16. To ward off any fibres which do penetrate the gap, the gap is made wider at the radially outer end than nearer the pump shaft 2.
