Abstract

1411219 Shock absorbers with hydraulic end stops JONAS WOODHEAD Ltd 22 Dec 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 44669/71 Heading F2S The terminal portion of the stroke of a telescopic hydraulic shock absorber is damped. The shock absorber has first means 31 which, when the piston (not shown) approaches one of the ends 2 of the cylinder 1, closes off a first flow passage (36, 37 and the space containing a spring 32) which is open when the piston moves in that direction over the mid-portion of its stroke; and second means 20 for thereafter opening a second flow passage (36, 37, 17, 16) to afford flow in the same direction as through the first passage. The end of the contraction stroke is damped, the first and second flow passages leading from the cylinder below the piston to a conventional base valve (part shown 3, 4, 5) communicating with an annular reservoir (Fig. 1, not shown). As the piston approaches the base valve, it compresses a spring 34 which moves members 26, 28 and 31 down against the bias of a light spring 32 until the valve member 31 engages a seat 15 to close the first flow passage. Pressure below the piston then builds up until it lifts a valve element 20 to open the second flow passage to the base valve.
