Abstract

1411136 Cyclone separators SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 13 Dec 1972 [10 Jan 1972] 57473/72 Heading B2P An apparatus for separating finely divided solids e.g. catalytic particles from a catalytic cracking unit, from an entraining gas, e.g. for subsequently using the cleaned gas in a turbine, comprises a plurality of tubular cyclone separators arranged to operate in parallel and to discharge separated solids into a common collection chamber 10, each of the separators comprising an upright swirl tube 7 of uniform cross-sectional area having a coaxial vortex finder 8, a lower solids discharge port 9 of substantially the same diameter as that of the swirl tube, and means for introducing solidsbearing gas into the swirl tube with tangential velocity. The solids bearing gas is fed through a tube, to a distributing chamber 2 and tangential velocity is imparted to the gas by swirl vanes 6 which have a discharge angle of 30‹ or less, measured from the lower surface of the vane to the horizontal. The vortex finders 8 open into a cleaned gas chamber 11 having an outlet 12.
