Abstract

140,985. Gill, J. H. W. Nov. 4, 1919. Propelling, steering, and maoeuvring by water jets.-In water-jet apparatus for propelling, steering, and manoeuvring ships, the jet orifices and pump intake are formed in a cylindrical body P of a rotary pump, which together with a casing U is rotatable bv hand or other means within a well W, where it is steadied by rollers F. The intake faces in the opposite direction to the discharge orifices, which are adapted to deliver two parallel jets, below the bottom of the vessel. The intake I is guarded by a grating G, and covered with a plate L. A plate K on the keel serves to remove weed, &c., from the lower part of the pump body as it is rotated. The pump body P is rotated by gearing M and hand-wheel H or other means. The pump rotor shaft S is driven by a horizontal internal-combustion engine E, steam-engine, or electric motor or, in a modification, through bevel gearing from a source of power in a distant part of the vessel. The casing U and well W are carried up above the water level, and if necessary a'cover-plate may be provided beneath the bridge B. In small plants, the engine may be mounted to turn with the pump casing. The device may be auxiliary to screw propellers, or may be fitted in the sides of a submarine or other vessel to assist raising or submer. sic.n.
