1409590 Vehicle wheel assemblies KARL SCHAEFF KG MASCHINENFABRIK 28 Aug 1973 40430/73 Addition to 1337062 Heading B7D [Also in Division E1] The double axle ground wheel assemblage of the shovel excavator of Specification 1,337,062 is replaced by a modified adjustable ground wheel assembly that permits of variation of the wheel base of the excavator from a short wheel base for towing to a long, stable wheel base for use when operating at a work site. In the shown embodiment each wheel 21, 22 is mounted on an associated swing link. The links are pivotally mounted on the chassis at the extremities thereof so that they can be swung, when the associated chassis extremity is raised, through at least 180 degrees. The swinging of the links may be caused by gravity and upward pressure of the ground as the chassis extremity is raised and lowered by suitable operation of the excavator with the shovel thereof bearing on the ground. Alternately the movement can be caused by piston cylinder units acting between the links and the chassis. The links, which normally abut directly or through resilient buffers the underside of the chassis, can be locked in various angular positions relative to the chassis to allow of the excavator working on slopes. The links of each pair of laterally aligned wheels may be firmly connected together. In an an alternative construction at least one pair of wheels can be arranged on profiled frame parts which are supported in longitudinally extending guides on the chassis, the parts being lockable to the chassis at a number of positions along the guides.
