Abstract
1407610 Hydrodesulphurizing residual oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 13 Oct 1972 47299/72 Heading C5E The catalytic hydrodesulphurization without catalyst replenishment of residual hydrocarbon oils having a total vanadium + nickel content above 120 p.p.m. wt. is carried out using a catalyst which is either (i) in the form of particles having a specific average pore diameter (p, in nm) and a specific average particle diameter (d, in mm) such that in which P H2 is the hydrogen partial pressure in bars, a pore volume above 0À45 ml./g., at least 0À4 ml./g. pore volume in pores with a diameter of at least 0À7 Î p and at most 1À7 Î p, and a pore diameter distribution such that (a) less than 20% of the pore volume is in pores of diameter smaller than 0À7 x p, (b) less than 20% of the pore volume is in pores of diameter larger than 1À7 x p and (c) less than 10% of the pore volume is in pores of diameter larger than 100 nm., or (ii) in the form of agglomerates formed from such particles and having more than 10% of their pore volume in pores with a diameter above 100 nm. The oil can be an atmospheric or vacuum residue which can be first subjected to a catalytic demetallization. The hydrodesulphurization can be carried out at 300-475 C. and a hydrogen partial pressure of 50-200 bar. The catalyst suitably comprises nickel and/or cobalt together with molybdenum and/or tungsten on an alumina carrier can can be in the metallic, oxidic or sulphided form.
