Abstract

1406479 Age resistant diene polymers GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 13 Nov 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 52300/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division C2] Age resistant diene polymers comprise phenolic monomer units of the formula wherein the groups are present in any order and wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are C 4 -C 8 tertiary alkyl; R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> (the same or different) are H, C 1 -C 12 alkyl, C 5 -C 12 cycloalkyl, C 7 -C 13 aralkyl or C 6 -C 12 aryl; R<SP>4</SP> is alkyl, cyloalkyl or aralkyl as defined for R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP>; R<SP>6</SP> is H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, carboxymethyl or carbalkoxymethyl; R6 is H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl, carboxyl or carbalkoxy; R<SP>9</SP> is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl as defined for R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP>; x is 0 or 1; y is 0 or 1-4; and z is 0 or 1-12, with the proviso that x + y + z equals 1-12; and at least 40 parts by weight (per 100 parts of the polymer) of units derived from a diene monomer. The polymers are preferably prepared by emulsion polymerization of the corresponding monomers. The diene monomer may be butadiene-1,3; 2- chlorobutadiene-1,3;isoprene;2-ethylbutadiene- 1,3; 2,3-dimethylbutadiene-1,3; piperylene; and hexadienes. The exemplified phenolic monomers are derived from amides of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, cinnamic, maleic and itaconic acids. The polymers of the invention may also include units of other comonomers such as styrene, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride.
