Abstract

Modified rubbers are prepared by the polymerization of one or more monomers, whose polymerization is not retarded by rubber, in the presence of rubber and an organic peroxide or hydroperoxide of the types R-O-O-R1 or R-O-OH where R and R1 are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups. Specified rubbers are natural rubber, and butadiene styrene copolymer, while specified monomers are methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride. Specified catalysts are phenyl-, cyclohexyl-, cumyl- and tertiarybutyl-hydroperoxides with activators such as triethylenetetramine or tetraethylene pentamine forming a Redox system. Benzoyl peroxide is also specified. It is preferred that the rubber is used as a latex. The polymerization may proceed to completion or be shortstopped, e.g. by chlordinitrobenzene. A second monomer containing two polymerizable groups such as divinyl benzene or ethylene dimethacrylate may also be present. The products may be mixed with the usual vulcanizing agents and cured.ALSO:Modified rubbers are prepared by the polymerization of one or more monomers, whose polymerization is not retarded by rubber, in the presence of rubber and an organic peroxide or hydroperoxide of the types R-O-O-R1 or R-O-O-H where R and R1 are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups. Specified catalysts are phenyl-, cyclohexyl-, cumyl-, and tertiary-butyl-hydroperoxides with activators to form a Redox system and benzoyl peroxide. Specified monomers are ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene and vinylidene chloride, while a second monomer such as divinyl benzene or ethylene dimethacrylate may also be present. The polymerization may proceed to completion or be short-stopped and the products may be cured.
