Abstract

1402845 Age resistant polymers and polymer compositions GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 15 June 1972 [15 June 1971] 9677/75 Divided out of 1402720 Heading C3P [Also in Division C2] New compounds of the general formula below are used to give age resistant properties to polymers, either by addition to pre-formed polymers or by using them as one of the monomers in a polymerization recipe containing at least 40 wt. per cent (based on total monomers) of a diene. The compounds are of formula wherein R is selected from alkyl radicals having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl radicals having 5 to 12 carbon atoms, aralkyl radicals having 7 to 24 carbon atoms and aryl radicals having 6 to 24 carbon atoms, wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are selected from hydrogen and alkyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and wherein R<SP>3</SP> is selected from hydrogen, alkyl radicals having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl radicals having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms, and aralkyl radicals having 7 to 24 carbon atoms, wherein R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP> , R<SP>7</SP> and R<SP>8</SP> are selected from hydrogen and alkyl radicals having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, wherein R<SP>9</SP> is selected from hydrogen, alkyl radicals having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, carboxymethyl radical and carbalkoxymethyl radicals, and wherein R<SP>10</SP> is selected from hydrogen, alkyl radicals having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, phenyl and substituted phenyl radicals, alkyl radicals having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkoxy radicals having 1 or 2 carbon atoms, carboxyl radical and carbalkoxy radicals. Compositions.-Examples illustrate the stabilization of SBR and nitrile rubber with 3-N-(41- anilinophenyl)-amino-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (the reaction product of glycidyl methacrylate and p-aminodiphenylamine). Polymers.-Examples describe the production, by conventional emulsion polymerization techniques, of terpolymers of (i) butadiene as major component, (ii) styrene or acrylonitrile, and (iii) the reaction product of glycidyl methacrylate with either p-aminodiphenylamine or N-phenyl- N<SP>1</SP>-1,3-dimethylbutyl-p-phenylene diamine.
