Abstract

1406256 Electrophonic musical instruments D H BALDWIN CO 11 Aug 1972 [16 Aug 1971] 37677/72 Heading G5J Automatic arpeggio is provided in an electrophonic organ by means responsive to actuation of selected keys to activate selected stages of a counter driven by a variable clock and means generating a corresponding tone when the count reaches an activated stage. Closure of a key switch 10 opens a corresponding gate 23, 24, 24a ... to pass a tone signal from a corresponding source 25. The outputs of each three adjacent notes are grouped and connected to a tone gate 36, 37 .... When any key is actuated a detector 21 triggers a counter 13 the stages of which are normally monostable circuits with a period of 30 Ásec. so that the counter passes from stage to stage too rapidly to open gates 36, 37 .... However when a key is operated, a potential on lead 45, 46 &c. transforms the corresponding stage of the counter into a bistable circuit which is reset by a clock (not shown). The dwell is sufficient to open the gate 36, 37 ... and pass the tone signal through formant filters 14 to a speaker 16. Actuation of a given key affects not only the corresponding signal gate, but also through diodes 51, the same note in all higher octaves so that as the counter counts a full up arpeggio is produced. The counter may be arranged to reverse at the end to produce an up-down arpeggio. The arpeggio tempo may be linked to the expression pedal. Several arpeggios may proceed simultaneously. If switch 12 is closed, shunt diodes isolate successive octaves so that only those notes actually keyed sound. The counter may be permanently stoped so that the organ plays conventionally.
