Abstract

1361032 Electrophonic musical instruments WURLITZER CO 25 Oct 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 49472/71 Heading G5J A musical instrument comprises a plurality of key switches connected to means producing a repeating train of pulses, with a repetition rate dependent upon which key is operated, and integrating means connected to the pulse producing means to generate an audio-frequency electric wave corresponding to a musical tone. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the pulse train is produced by means of a shift register 34 connected to a counter 42, the shift register and counter being driven from the same clock 36. Each key on the keyboard is associated with a respective switch 24 which is connected to one stage of the shift register, each stage of which is connected by a bus 40 to the counter. Upon closing a key switch the shift register shifts to the corresponding stage and the output from that stage of the shift register causes the counter to dump its count on to the line 46. The line 46 is connected through a distributer 48 to a succession of buffer memories 50 the number of buffer memories being dependent upon how many notes it is required to play simultaneously. Each buffer memory is connected to a variable clock 52, the variable clocks being controlled by a master clock, and the output of each variable clock is connected to an N-state register 54. The train of pulses supplied via the distributer passes through the N-state register and the density of pulses is controlled by means of a feedback matrix 56 connected to the register, the feedback pattern itself being controlled by means of a plurality of diode switches 60 and the pattern may be preset to give the desired pulse train at the output of the register. Integrating means 64 connected to the output of the shift register produce an audio-frequency output which is then amplified and connected to a loud-speaker. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), in order to produce the appropriate pulse repetition rate the octave and note position within the octave of each key is represented in digital form, the pulse train being produced by means of a master clock associated with a plurality of gates, the gates being connected to the key switches and the output of said gates being connected to a divider. The output from the divider is then connected to the N-stage shift register as before.
