1404434 Nuclear fuel elements GELSENBERG AG 1 March 1973 [1 March 1972 4 May 1972] 10043/73 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel element comprises a metal jacket tube containing (a) coated spherical particles of a Pu or U233 fuel or (b) cylindrical pellets made by pressing unsintered coated spherical particles of a Pu or U233 fuel, and sintering, the coating material being free from Pu and U233 and including an oxide, carbide, or nitride of fertile material U238 or Th232; an outer layer of BeO may be applied over an inner layer of the fertile material or an additional layer of ZrC may be applied. The coating layer may be applied by chemical precipitation or in a rotating vessel containing the powdered coating material. The purpose of the coating is to reduce alpha radiation and Pu toxicity.
