Abstract
1402204 Speedometers DAVY-LOEWY Ltd 16 April 1974 [8 Feb 1973] 6212/73 Heading G1K [Also in Division G3] Apparatus for determining the speed of strip material 5, Fig.1, moving in the direction of its length comprises a sleeve 1 which is supported in spaced relation to a stationary core 2 by pressure gas supplied through passages 4 and is rotated by engagement with the strip. A further passage 8 in the core receives the pressure gas from the space 3 and is connected to means for detecting variation of the gas pressure. One or more axial grooves 6 in the sleeve create sudden drops in pressure in passage 8 at a frequency which is dependent on the rotational speed of the sleeve. These pressure drops are picked up by the detecting means and hence the linear speed of the strip can be determined. The detecting means may be a transducer which produces an electrical signal representative of pressure. A respective apparatus of the invention may be arranged upstream and downstream of a mill for rolling metal strip, with the latter driving the respective sleeves, Fig.2 (not shown). Thus by comparing the number of pressure reductions occurring in the two apparatus, the ratio of ingoing and outgoing strip speed is determined and consequently the elongation of the strip as it passes through the mill can be found.
