Abstract

1397716 Variable resistors E F JOHNSON CO 18 July 1973 [15 Sept 1972] 34247/73 Heading HIS A variable resistor 10 comprises an elongate T-shaped insulating base 11 carrying resistive and conductive tracks on top and bottom surfaces of the cross-bar of the T, and a conductive slider 20 with a contact 21 which engages the top track 16 and sides 25, 26 which embrace the cross-bar so that bottom portions 27, 28 of the slider engage the lower tracks 15, 14. The base 11 is of ceramic or plastics and the contact 21 is shown biased by a spring 22, but a resilient woven or mesh contact (21a, Fig. 6, not shown) may be used. The track 16 is a resistive track connected to a conductive end coating 13 on the base 11, while the tracks 14, 15 are conductive and are connected to an opposite end coating 12; the coatings 12, 13 are soldered to printed circuit board conductors 31, 32. To provide a potentiometer, however, the coatings 12, 13 are connected to the two ends of track 16 and other conductive surfaces are provided, connected to tracks 14, 15. The tracks may contain discontinuities for specific applications, and track width may vary along its length.
