Abstract

1,185,426. Variable resistors. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. 10 Oct., 1968 [1 Nov., 1967], No. 47974/68. Heading HIS. A variable resistor comprises a housing 5 having a cavity 9 in which is mounted a resistance element and a threaded shaft 12 with one end thereof protruding through a wall of the housing, and also including a contact carrier block 16 which co-operates with shaft 12 so as to move along the length of the shaft when rotated, block 16 supporting a contact member 17 which engages the resistance element, and further including a resilient metallic member 20, for example of beryllium-copper alloy, which moves with block 16 and comprises two spring arms 21 and 22 which normally ride in the groove of threaded shaft 12 but, when block 16 is stopped by abutment 19 on the housing and while the shaft continues to rotate, will snap over the top of the threads of shaft 12 to produce a " clicking " sound. The resistance element, for example cermet material or conductive plastic, and contact element 11a are linear in form and lie parallel to one another on a non-conductive ceramic support 10. Block 16; which is rectangular in shape, is provided with a threaded bore to co-operate with shaft 12 and is formed from a plastics insulating material such as molybdenum disulfide filled nylon. Member 20 rides in a groove 23, formed in the housing, which serves to hold the member in place. In a second embodiment member 20 is provided with lugs which are pressed into block 16 to hold the member in place (Figs. 6 to 8, not shown).
