Abstract

1395757 Paper-making WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 29 March 1973 [7 April 1972] 16210/72 Heading D2A [Also in Division B1] Apparatus for producing a foamed fibre dispersion for use in the manufacture of non- woven fibrous material comprises an inlet manifold and an outlet manifold interconnected by a plurality of foam-forming pipes each having at least one internal region consisting of a succession of zones of short extent and alternate lesser and greater cross-section. The manifolds may be straight pipes (3, 4, Figs. 1, 2 not shown) interconnected by a set of straight parallel pipes (1), alternate pipes (1) having on/off valves (10) for control of the throughput with tubular inserts (2) arranged at the inlet end of each pipe (1). Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 4, the manifolds may comprise cylindrical housings 11, 12 provided with radially projecting stub pipes 15 interconnected by coiled flexible tubes 1 each having valves 14 and an insert 2 providing a constricted cross section at its inlet end. In apparatus for making a fibrous web, Fig. 5, metered quantities of air with fibres and liquid (water) containing a surface active agent are fed together with recycled partly foamed liquid to a pre-mixer 18 and the resultant dispersion pumped through the inlet manifold 3, 11 pipes 1 and outlet manifold 4, 12 to the wire 24 of a Fourdrinier, vacuum means 25 being provided to assist drainage.
