Abstract

1397378 Paper-making apparatus WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT LTD 30 March 1973 [7 April 1972] 15344/73 Divided out of 1395757 Heading D2A In a method or apparatus for manufacturing non-woven fibrous material e.g. paper, in which a foamed fibre dispersion is deposited on a foraminous support 1, e.g. a foundrinier machine, vacuum-creating means 3, 4 are connected to the underside of the support 1 and to a mixer 18 such that a major part of the liquid drained from the support is recovered and pumped back to the mixer to be mixed with fibres, water, and metered quantities of air and a surface active agent, the mixture then being fed to a foaming device 20 for delivery to the headbox 2 of the machine. The foaming device 20 may comprise a bank of pipes (Figs 2 and 3, not shown) connecting inlet and outlet manifolds and each having a construction to create turbulence in the mixture to produce foam. As shown, fibre is beaten with water in a beater 22, e.g. a Hollander beater, is fed to storage chests 24 and then via a refiner 28 and thickener 29 to a pulper 31. An agitator 32 mixes the stock with liquid from tank 33 which has been drained from the wire 1 by vacuum-creating means 3, 4 coupled to vacuum boxes 12, 13. Broke drained from the wire 1 is collected in a pit 6, slushed by an agitator 9 and fed to a tank 11. Broke from the tank 11 is fed via a deflector 36 to the pulper 31. Air and a surface active agent, metered by devices 38, 39, are added to the mixture from the pulper 31, and the mixture is then deflaked at 40 and further mixed with drained liquid from pipes 14-16 before being fed to the mixer 18, foaming device 21 and headbox 2.
