1394106 Silicon carbide bodies A S TARABANOV P N MAKHALOV V S DERGUNOVA G E LAZAREV A D GOPIUS G V ANTIPIN and M T BANNIKOV 12 Aug 1972 37726/72 Heading C1A A SiC body containing elemental C and Si is prepared by (a) hot-pressing a mixture of carbonaceous material with a binder at a temp. of 150-180‹ C. to form a green body having a density of 1À0-1À4 g./c.c., (b) calcining the green body at 800-1000‹ C. and then (c) impregnating the body with molten Si at a temp. of 1700-2050‹ C. The body may have a SiC content of 20-72% by wt., C content of 10-75% and a Si content of 3-25%. Fe and/or Al may be added to the carbonaceous mixture prior to pressing in an amount up to 3% by wt. of the product. The molten Si may be alloyed with Ni, Co, Zr, Nb, Ti, Mo, W, Ta and/or Cr. The carbonaceous material may be graphite, carbon black and/or carbon fibres. The binder may be a phenol-formaldehyde resin. Compression may be carried out at a pressure of 50-200 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>. The green body may be calcined in an inert atmosphere and the impregnation performed in a vacuum.
