Abstract

1392688 Ignition systems MOTOROLA Inc 28 Sept 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 45553/73 Heading F1B A capacitor discharge ignition system has a main ignition system 12 with a main storage capacitor 60 and spark duration extending circuitry 14 including an auxiliary capacitor 84 coupled to the ignition coil 68 of the main ignition system and to the charging apparatus of the main storage capacitor so as to be charged by this apparatus. A controlled switch arrangement 92 is connected electrically to the auxiliary capacitor for discharging the auxiliary capacitor and a timer circuit 104 is coupled electrically to the controlled switch arrangement, the timer circuit being operable in response to the discharge of the main storage capacitor to operate the controlled switch arrangement for discharging the auxiliary capacitor into the ignition coil 68, and the timer circuit 104 having a predetermined delay period for delaying the discharge of the auxiliary capacitor a predetermined time after the initiation of the discharge of the main storage capacitor thereby to extend the duration of the ignition output voltage from the ignition coil. The timer circuit is coupled to a transformer 36 and upon discharge of the main storage capacitor a voltage is induced in the winding 38 of the transformer 36 which is passed to the base of the transistor 18 to turn this transistor on. This produces a current on the lead 120 for operating the timer circuit. The control electrode 80 of the silicon controlled rectifier 64 is connected through a transformer 82 to breaker points or to a magnetic pick-up (not shown).
