Abstract
1392672 Soldering CORNING GLASS WORKS 29 March 1973 [29 March 1972 30 Oct 1972] 15261/73 Heading B3R In a composite article comprising a glass component having a passage therethrough and a metal member covering the passage and hermetically sealed to the glass component, an annular coating of metal of high coefficient of. expansion relative to that of the glass is hermetically adhered to a surface of the glass surrounding the passage and the metal member which is of low coefficient of expansion relative to the glass is soldered to the annular coating with a hermetic solder which has a high coefficient of expansion relative to that of the annular metal coating, said solder being confined within the boundaries of the annular coating. A glass component 2, e.g. the rear wall of a headlamp for a motor vehicle, has a passage 2a therethrough, an annular coating 6 of metal surrounding the passage on the surface of the component 2 and a metal component 7 which covers both the annular coating 6 and the passage and is hermetically soldered to the coating 6. An electrical lead conductor 9 extends through the passage 2a and through an orifice in the plate 7 being hermetically soldered to the plate 7. In alternative embodiments (Figs. 2-4, not shown) the annular coating is provided on an external slightly tapering wall of a projecting portion of the glass component and the metal component has the form of a cap member. The annular coating may be provided by a preciousmetal paint, e.g. containing silver, or may be of nickel deposited by sputtering and has a high coefficient of thermal expansion compared with that of the glass component. The metal component 7 has a very low coefficient of expansion. Where the annular coating is of silver the solder may comprise 50% Sn, 47% Pb and 3% Ag. For a nickel coating the solder may comprise 5% Sn, 95% Pb; 2À5% Ag, 97À5% Pb; or 5% In, 94À2% Pb, 0À83% Ag.
